The fashion protest is civil society’s creative way to demand the Philippine government and donor countries to fulfill commitments on effective development cooperation principles towards Agenda 2030.
While SDG 17 serves to ensure the means to achieve the other sustainable development goals, negative impacts of debt distress, corporate capture of development and militarization of aid have only served to worsen the state of development in recipient countries. In the Philippines, unequal and exploitative partnerships resulted in rising debt, inaccessibility of services and shrinking of civic spaces.
“There is clear and strong opposition against the Kaliwa dam in Dumagat communities. It will be best if the government and MWSS listen to the voices of the opposition, stop the project, and seek other alternatives to ensure stable water supply for Metro Manila and nearby provinces. The claim that many people ‘benefit’ from it does not justify the huge displacement and ethnocide,” Beyer further explained.
