Kalikasan PNE lambasted the Marcos Jr. administration for failing even to recognize the ‘dire’ situation of environmental activists in the country. Alongside the other groups in the EDC, they called for impartial investigations into the continued attacks, including the indiscriminate military operations affecting entire communities.
While SDG 17 serves to ensure the means to achieve the other sustainable development goals, negative impacts of debt distress, corporate capture of development and militarization of aid have only served to worsen the state of development in recipient countries. In the Philippines, unequal and exploitative partnerships resulted in rising debt, inaccessibility of services and shrinking of civic spaces.
Grassroots organizations, advocacy groups, and the civil society have registered their indignation over these injustices and warned that this draconian climate will be institutionalized if the Anti-Terror Law of 2020 is not blocked by the Supreme Court. Maza stressed that the Anti-Terror Law (ATL) should be repealed. “The ATL will complete the evolution of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) into a war machine against democracy,” she added.
