People’s Review of the SDGs: Rising above the health and economic crisis in the time of COVID-19

June 24, 2021

Warm greetings!

In 2015, the Philippines was among the 193 countries that committed to the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 which seeks to eradicate poverty and inequality through its 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). The fifth year of SDGs implementation coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 which brought the global economy and health system on the verge of collapse. The pandemic wiped out whatever little gains were achieved by countries in their implementation of the SDGs.

Prior to the pandemic, the Philippines was already falling short in achieving its SDG targets. The pandemic, harsh lockdowns, and grossly-imbalanced government response appear to have made the situation worse.

The Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022 which serves as the government’s blueprint for achieving the SDGs is still anchored on the same development framework that has brought the country’s economy and health system in chronic crisis.

It is in this context that the Council for People’s Development and Governance, along with its member organizations cordially invite you to the PH Civil Society SDG Watch July 5 to 19, 2021 Forum Series.

Themed “People’s Review of the SDGs: Rising above the economic and health crisis in the time of COVID-19”, the forum series aims to:

a) assess the Philippines’ progress in implementation of the SDGs;

b) identify major policies and programs hindering the achievement of these goals especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic; and,

c) propose policies for immediate relief, recovery, and long-term development.
