The pandemic has further exposed the unsustainability and unjustness of the neoliberal global consumption and production system. Current health, economic and ecological crises urge us to overhaul the prevailing system, and to replace it with People-Powered Sustainable Consumption and Production (PP-SCP), which prioritises the welfare of the people and planet and strives to dismantle systemic inequalities. The principles of PP-SCP are the following: (1) people’s rights are protected and advanced in the whole production and consumption chain; (2) self-sufficiency from the community to the national level is promoted through people’s sovereignty; (3) social innovations and community actions toward SCP are encouraged and supported; and (4) accountability of corporations and governments is demanded and ensured are already being lead and practiced by grassroots communities and must be allowed to flourish.
These regional webinars aim to prepare and build solidarity among CSOs in Asia and Africa for the upcoming Global People’s Summit on Food Systems. These also build on the 2020 webinars and dialogs simultaneously held in the Philippines and Kenya with the theme “Advocating for People-Centered Sustainability Amid and Beyond Covid-19”.
